Catholics/Bettering oneself

Question
Hello,

I have a problem. I’m finding it very difficult to better myself, to the point where I’m not even sure I know how to better myself. I’ve never experienced a ‘changed life’ for more than a few days. The cause of my perversion is whatever changed between the time I experienced a changed life and the time at which I was perverted. I don’t know what’s changed, so I don’t know what the cause is, so I don’t know what I’ve been doing wrong. I question whether I know the difference between right and wrong. I must not know the difference, because I can’t even tell what I’m doing wrong! I read the bible several times a day, and I pray several times a day. Sometimes I feel like my prayers are unanswered and reading the bible doesn’t seem to be helping. How does one better him or herself? Is there a secret to becoming a better person? Please shed some light my way, because I’m in some serious darkness.

Thanks.

Peace

dear Anonymous,
First, be assured of my prayers in union with that the Church, whenever I am at Mass. I pray daily for those who write me, questions.

Second is my main suggestion: Seek out a priest that you feel conformable with and ask him to prayerful consider being a spiritual director/confessor to you.

Third perhaps read some of great Catholic books related to spiritual growth. If you tell me a little about yourself, I can better suggestion books for your needs. I am 38, male, single and a lay Secular Franciscan and work full time in a local resturaunt. Information like the just stated, would me suggest the right kind book for you.

I am willing to attempt to answer any question. If I don’t know the answer, I will look-up or pass the question on to friends for feed back. Beside Catholicism (especially the social/moral and the Eastern rites), I am well read on Mormonism and so-called Modern Christian Fundamentalism. Also I study Franciscan History as means of growing in my lay Franciscan calling to holiness in Christ.
