Catholics/Salvation

Question
How can the Catholic Church (or any church for that matter) claim to be the path of salvation when Jesus said that He and He alone is the way to God?

Answer
Dear Alex:

There is no contradiction between Jesus being the path of salvation and the Catholic Church being the way Jesus chose to bring that salvation. The Catholic Church does not say that it is the way of salvation. Jesus founded this Church as the means of his salvation in the world (Mt. 16:17-19). Jesus made the Catholic Church the "pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Tim. 3:15). Jesus is the way to the Father, but he gave the world the Church while he is in heaven with the Father. The Catholic Church has the Pope to represent Jesus to the world. The Pope is the highest representative for the people of God. Salvation is from the work of Christ on the cross and his Resurrection. So he has the right to dispense that salvation however he sees fit. The Bible says that he chose to dispense this salvation through the Catholic Church.
