Catholics/RCIA - Husband has been married before

Question
On visiting my parish priest last night to enrole in the RCIA programme, I was told that we would have to discuss whether I could be received into the church because my husband had been married before.  My husband has a child from his first marriage (out of wedlock), but when they eventually decided to marry, it only lasted 6 months as she didnt love him any longer.  I met him 2 years later and he was waiting for his final paper to be received, having already received his decree nici.

We have been married for 7 years, have a child who is being brought up in the catholic faith, attends a catholic school and is also looking to be received into the catholic church.

My question is two fold.  Am I able to be received into the catholic church and is our daughter to be punished and rejected also?

Answer
Hi Julie.  I'm sorry for the delay.  I forgot to put my vacation notice up for last week.

My thoughts:

1. Definitely continue with the RCIA as planned.
2. Make that appointment to talk to the priest to confirm what he needs to know to know how to direct you next.  It may be that you need to seek an annulment.
3. Your daughter will be received fully. There will be no delay or hoops to jump through for her.

Please be patient, Julie.  Pray for patience and guidance in this matter knowing that it is right.

I'm no expert in the matter but it sounds to me as though the annulment would be successful.

My family will pray for your family.

Rick.

I can help clarify fact vs. fiction regarding the teachings of the Catholic Faith. I believe that Catholicism is the best representation of the Historic Christian Faith and that this can be shown with Scripture, reason and history.

I am an ecumenical apologist. I'm not interested in telling non-Catholics why they are wrong, but am happy to explain and confirm what we believe and why we; from Scripture, reason and history.

There are some issues where I will have to politely agree to disagree with my non-Catholic brother in Christ, however there is so much that we share in common, I'd prefer to clarify those first. :)

As a former Protestant (Church of the Nazarene) I came to the faith by recognizing, after lengthy study, that Catholocism is the best representation of the Historic Christian Faith. Very interested in "ecumenical apologetics", and have started a website pursuing it: www.catholictruths.com
