Question
Jesus says he came to fulfill the law, but he says to turn the other cheek instead
of doing it eye for eye. When it comes to acts of violence, the bible says an eye
for an eye. But Jesus says turn the other cheek. Does this not mean he is
preaching something opposing the law?

Answer
In Mt 5, Jesus summarizes His relationship to the [old]Law with a series of before and now.  Some of the changes for the better are very striking.
Jesus came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it [verse 17].  The fulfillment involved some changes for the better in order to perfect what God had been preparing for centuries.  So, we read in verse 38 that the old rule of non-excessive punishment [no more than an eye for an eye]needs to cede to merciful forgiveness [verse 39] -- that is the way to perfection [verse 48].
I hope these thoughts help, Peter.  If you wish more, please write again.  Best wishes.
