Question
Hi,

   I have a few problems, the first of which deals with selfishness. I’m using God for my own benefit. I feel like I want to better myself for the wrong reasons. How can I stop being selfish?

   The second problem has to do with the seventh commandment. I’m a young man -- an adolescent to be precise – and I masturbate regularly. I recognize it as committing adultery and being a sin. I always feel miserable after I do it, but I do it anyway. How can I overcome selfish desires and others like this?

    First, I would recommend praying daily for the grace to achieve a spirit of humility and purity of heart as suggested by a number of the great saints of history.
     Second seek out a priest to be your regular confessor, to help you discern if your "habit" is spiritual or otherwise in nature. And so they  can bestow the graces of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, if its necessary.
