Question
We know a young man who is currently a "transitional" deacon, he will be ordains a priest this spring in Denver.  My wife and I would like to surprise him with his own garment for the ceremony. My wife is an excellent seamstress and would like to make it if possible. We don't where to turn to get the correct info on what is appropriate in style, color or symbols.  Can you set in the right direction for the right information? Thanks , John

Answer
Hi, John:
Thanks for the question.
I did not want to push an "autoreject" option for this question to state that it is really sort of out of my area of expertise.  I would suggest that you contact the Office of Worship for your Diocese where the Ordination Ceremony will be taking place.  In this way, you could find out the day and date of the Ordination, and what Feast it will fall on.  I am guessing that the color for the day of the Ordination will be either white or red; but it could be almost any of the other liturgical colors, except probably black, rose, or violet.
It would be a good idea to tell them about your desire to plan to try to give him his vestement for the ceremony, because maybe the Diocese has its own matching set of vestments it would prefer to use - I don't know.  Maybe they would ask you if you'd be willing to make a matching set for all the Sacred Ministers for the occasion.
So, again - I would have to direct you to the Office of Worship, most probably at the Chancery of the Archdiocese of Denver.

Past/Present Clients
I serve 3-small, rural Parish Communities in Easter North Dakota
I converted to the Roman Catholic Church in 1981, at the age of 15. Over the years I have done work as an organist, cantor, and choir director for the Latin Rite (English & Latin) Mass (Liturgy of the Eucharist), and even for the Hours of the Divine Office. I have worked as a cantor for a Melkite Byzantine Catholic Church. Presently my pastoral and administrative duties as a Catholic Priest do not allow me as much time as I used to have to devote to Sacred Music; but for my weekend Masses and Solemnities within my Tri-Parish, I offer High Sung Mass in English. Weekday Mass is typically Low Mass (recited Mass) in English, though on occasion I will offer the "Tridentine Mass" in Latin, which I usually offer on my "Day Off", as well. And now, in light of the "Motu Proprio" by his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI placing the extraordinary usage of the Roman Rite back into the mainstream of the Catholic Church, I have been offering a regularly scheduled SUN, 2:00 PM Tridentine Latin Mass with a community of the faithful that has a stable existence.
