Catholics - Eating Meat on Fridays

Expert: George A. Card,sfo, M.I - 10/18/2009

Question
Since Chrismas falls on a Friday this year, are we still obligated to obstain from meat or do another form of penance on this day?

Answer
Peace

dear Phyllis

I don't know officially (I even searched on line)but my guess no. The reason for my no is Christmas celebrates and recalls our Savior has indeed come, in the person of Jesus the Christ. There other feast days, where the fast would be dropped, is another reason for my guess of no.

Yet you if want play it safe, you could go meatless to recall the fact our Savior indeed came the flesh and offered Himself for our redemption from sin and the pre-Incarnation ritural laws.

I am lay Secular Franciscan, as such I am called to be a sign of Joyful penance, so I serve meat but refrain from it myself when I host for my family meal.

                                                your servant but His first
                                                         George
