Catholics/self mutalation

Question
Why do Catholics belive that self mutilation is bad?

Answer
Self-mutilation damages or kills part of the body God gave us as His gift to us.  This differs from the necessary mutilations that take place during surgery for various serious medical conditions since they are done towards the greater good of the body.  But self-mutilations done merely for amusement or pleasure serve no such greater good of the body but merely impair its functioning to what extent they do anything at all, to no purpose.
This runs up against the same commandment as that against murder, even of oneself (suicide).
Hope this helps, God bless!
