QUESTION: Hi Sal,

I'm confused about the difference between a priest, brother and deacon.  I know that the word "deacon" is mentioned in the Bible.  Why don't deacons and brothers become priests?  Can you tell me how priests, brothers and deacons are different?  Thanks.

ANSWER: Dear Les:

Priests and deacons are ordained while brothers are not. Brothers make a vow to an order and do not intend to become priests. Deacons can be “transitional” meaning that the deacon is going to transition to the priesthood. Deacons can also be “permanent” meaning that they will not become priests. Only priests and deacons may read the gospel and give a homily at mass. Deacons may perform all duties of a priest except for concreting the Eucharist and hearing confession.

I have one more question.  Are deacons allowed to marry?

Hi Les:

Of course, transitional deacons may not marry because they are intending to become priests. Permanent deacons may not marry once they are ordained. If a candidate to the permanent deaconate is married prior to ordination he can still be ordained. However, if his wife dies after he is ordained then he may not remarry and still be a deacon.
