Catholics/Hearing Voices/Discernment

Question
Hello. I sometimes hear a voice in my head which speaks kind, loving words to me.  Does this mean I’m insane?  Maybe I’m just psychic?

I must tell you that I am not interested in the hearing voices or the supernatural because it's ambiguous, subjective, and not verifiable.

I ask God for help...but what if the one speaking to me really is God?  I wouldn’t know.

This leads me to a question:  How can God expect you to obey Him if you don’t even know whether it is He is speaking to you or not?

Thank you for your assistance.

Answer
Hi Emily,

Before He died Jesus made us a promise:

John 14:23-29

23 Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. 25 "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all  that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe.

This promise means that God loves us all so madly that He actually come to live in our hearts. Living there He talks to us, in fact He loves us so much He never shuts up.

The problem is not that God whispers but that our ears do not listen. Devote time to prayer everyday, say half an hour to begin with and you'll find He's roaring like a mighty lion ay you all the time, telling He loves you very, very much.

Don't think because you hearing Him tell you He loves you makes you mad. Its the one's who don't hear Him who are mad.
