Catholics - Marriage

Expert: George A. Card,sfo, M.I - 6/22/2009

Question
What exactly happens to a Catholic when he marries a Protestant in a Protestant ceremony? Is he automatically excommunicated? Is he considered truly married in the eyes of the Church? What?

Answer
Peace

dear Sam
In the eyes of the Church, there is Marriage and the Sacrament of Holy Martimony. You are not automaticlly excommicated. You could be in a state of Moral sin, however depending on related facts.

I suggest reading: #1601-1666 of the Catechism approved by the late John Paul (II) the Great, especially 1633-1637.

                                 your servant in Christ
                                          George
