Question
I do not really understand how Eastern Catholics - such as the Ukrainian Greek Catholics or the Maronites - differ from Roman Catholics. Are Eastern Catholic officials eligible to be elected pope in Rome? Can Eastern Catholics be "convert" into Roman Catholics? And has there ever been any instances of persecution or rivalry between these churches?

    Eastern Catholic are full union with Papal Rome. Eastern Orthodox Churches are those that reject Papal Rome's Peterine authority. Maronite Catholics are only Eastern rite that never broke communion with Papal Rome. Any Catholic male can become pope.
    There have been persection and rivalry between Catholics and Orthodox, and even between Catholics of east and west. Mainly do to political unrest or lack of understanding.
     Vatican II and John Paul (II) the Great have beautiful documents on the Eastern rites and their role in the Church.
