Crucifix reliquary
Crucifix reliquary
QUESTION: I have just found a crucifix that opens and supposedly has relics inside. Is there anyway of telling what type of relics these are, whether 1st class etc.

ANSWER: Hi, Lawrence:
Thanks for the question.
Based upon the description you gave me: No, I cannot tell you what sort of relics they might be.  If there is any kind of script (writing) of any kind, perhaps you could transcribe the writing into your question to me so that I can decifer it.  Is there any sort of a "paper" in with the relics?  I will await any further input so that I can try to help you solve this.

QUESTION: There are some small pieces of paper that have the following words and or names.Theodosi, turnin, Agnus, Martyr, enantiu, digna, and Justini. (Note)Because of the placement of the papers I may have only extracted only part of the word. attached is a diagram which shows the placement of the words or names.
Thank you so much father for your efforts!

Answer
Hi, Lawrence:

I could see the image of the diagram, but not the image of the reliquary itself.  The names of the Saints are all martyrs, as far as I can tell.  Even the one called simply "Martyr" is most probably a relic from the 30 JUNE annual Feast of the First Martyrs of the Church at Rome.  My suspicion would be that these are probably 1st Class relics, meaning that they are actual very small pieces of the bodies of these Saints.  Then again, they could be 2nd class, that is, something of the Saint's that he/she used or wore during life.  If they are 3rd class, then they are pieces of something that has been touched to the body of the saints.
I hope this is at least somewhat helpful...

Past/Present Clients
I serve 3-small, rural Parish Communities in Easter North Dakota
I converted to the Roman Catholic Church in 1981, at the age of 15. Over the years I have done work as an organist, cantor, and choir director for the Latin Rite (English & Latin) Mass (Liturgy of the Eucharist), and even for the Hours of the Divine Office. I have worked as a cantor for a Melkite Byzantine Catholic Church. Presently my pastoral and administrative duties as a Catholic Priest do not allow me as much time as I used to have to devote to Sacred Music; but for my weekend Masses and Solemnities within my Tri-Parish, I offer High Sung Mass in English. Weekday Mass is typically Low Mass (recited Mass) in English, though on occasion I will offer the "Tridentine Mass" in Latin, which I usually offer on my "Day Off", as well. And now, in light of the "Motu Proprio" by his Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI placing the extraordinary usage of the Roman Rite back into the mainstream of the Catholic Church, I have been offering a regularly scheduled SUN, 2:00 PM Tridentine Latin Mass with a community of the faithful that has a stable existence.
