Catholics/Major beliefs

Question
The belief system of the Roman Catholic church, could it be said it originated through revelation, intellect, or how?
Also, what are the original beliefs upon which the faith of the church lies?  Have any of these major beliefs changed over time, if so, why?
I'm concerned to find the basics of my beliefs and I want to be convinced of my beliefs, and one more question, What should I believe about afterlife?  I'm totally confused.

Answer
Dear Nabor:

Catholic beliefs originated with revelation. The original beliefs of the Catholic Church can be seen by reading the New Testament. Doctrine does develop over time, but this is very different from truth changing. To better understand the afterlife see the Catechism paragraphs 1020-1050.
