Catholics/Situation Ethics

Question
During a discussion of faith, my friend who is a practicing Catholic, stated that his faith does not have any black or white (absolute) truths.  Every tenet is open to interpretation.  For example, none of the ten commandments can be taken at face value.  One must consider the situation.  The Pope's edicts on birth control, abortion etc. are just his opinions and not binding to all Catholics.  Is he correct?

Answer
On the general point, he is seriously incorrect.  What he is enunciating is called the Heresy of Modernism.  There are very definite truths.  The fundamental ones are contained in the three Creeds:  Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian.  There are others that come from Scripture and Tradition.
