Catholics/Temptation of Adam & Eve

Question
during a discussion my neighbor said that God had "set up Adam & Eve to sin", setting up temptation and telling them not to eat of the forbidden tree of knowledge. He said it's like telling a child not to do something, knowing the child will try to do it. I told him God gave us free will & that is why they sinned. We await your answer.  Thank you

Answer
Dear Barbara:

God didn't try to make Adam and Eve sin. You're right that they had the ability to obey God. They were not like little children. Don't forget that Adam and Eve did not have our weaknesses. Our wills have been weakened by the effects of original sin.

I hope that this helps,
