Catholics/Flowers on the Altar

Question
Fr. Michael,
During lent, there is no flower on the altar of sacrifice, but i find out that on the altar of the Legion of Mary (a society), there is flower on her altar during meetings.
Is this right, and if so why.
Thanks.

Answer
Strictly speaking, the rubric about flowers seems to apply to official liturgical celebrations:  the Divine Office and the Mass.  Naturally, the penitential nature of the season extends beyond that, but the practice that you describe, particularly if it is a custom during meetings, would not seem to violate the spirit.
