QuestionHello. I've been reading the Bible and have a couple questions about what seem like discrepancies. In Romans 3 Paul says "There is much value in circumcision" but in Galatians 5 he says circumcision has no value?" just seems like a contradiction I'm trying to clear up. Along with why Jesus said "The Father is greater than I" but yet he is God? Thanks, Laura
AnswerIn Galations, Paul is arguing against those who want to rely on Jewish practices [the law] rather on Christ and His teachings. It is not the Jewish law but faith in Christ [and what goes with the total teaching of Jesus] that makes one a Christian. The whole chapter [5] reitrates the idea.
In Romans, Paul is recalling the special revelation of God in the Old Testament to guide the Jews to a proper understanding of God and His will. Historically, the Jews of old received a special treatment. The remainder of the chapter brings out facets of this teaching.
So, the discrepancy disappears when one considers that the two quotations are dealing with different issues.
In Jn 14:28, the reference to the Father as greater does not refer to Jesus' not being God -- see Jn 5:26, 17:5. You can check other passages in John to see the nuances of "greater" -- 4:12, 8:53, 13:16, 1:51, 5:20, 10:29. In short, the Father is greater because eveything that hppens originates with Him and is taken to its end by Him. The Father will proves His greatness in the glorification of His Son.
I hope these thoughts help, Laura. If you wish more, please feel free to write again.
Best wishes.
