Catholics/Self Study Ph.D. Theology Program
Expert: Fr. Michael - 1/12/2011
QuestionGood Afternoon,
One of my long term goals is to get a PH.D in Biblical Theology from a Catholic school. However, due to money issues, I cannot.
I am wanting to start a self study program, but lack knowledge of where to start.
Assuming I know nothing about biblical theology, can you recommend a list of books (easy books first) or a self study program I can use.
God Bless!
Travis
AnswerIn the area of general philosophy and theology, you could select from the following to start:
Summa Theologiae (Biblioteca de Autores Cristianos, Madrid, 4th ed./1994), 5 vols. The complete text in Latin.
The Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas, tr. by the Fathers of the English Domenican Province (Sophia Institute Press). A complete English translation of the Summa.
Essential Works of St. Thomas Aquinas (Modern Library). Selections from the Summa Theologica and the Summa contra Gentiles in English translation.
Summa Theologiae: A Concise Translation (Christian Classics, 1989). A abridgement in English.
Tour of the Summa, by Paul J. Glenn (Tan Books, 1978). A complete, chapter-by-chapter synopsis and restatement of the Summa Theologiae.
A History of Philosophy, by Frederick Copleston (Book 1, Doubleday Doubleday Image Books, 1946-53). A survey of the main philosophical currents in Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, and the early Renaissance.
Guide to Thomas Aquinas, by Josef Pieper (Sophia Institute Press). An introduction to the life, times, and thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.
