Question
Why do Catholics go to a Priest for forgiveness?

Answer
Peace

dear Judy
God is the source of mercy and wisdom. He uses the priest, to apply the mercy gained for us by the merits of Christ, the Savior. By confessing your sins to a priest, it helps you to be more sincere and humble about your sins and acceptance of the fact you indeed need God's mercy.

Also the priest also can help you make amends for your sins, in ways that doesn't hurt innocent people. For example let's say you stole a hundred dollars from your employer for some foolish want. If you are truly sorry, you would return the money and pay any damage done because you stole the money. If you directly did so, in most cases you would probly be fired.  If you get fired you can get the food and other things that your family really needs. So with the help of the priest you can pay back and your family doesn't not have to stuffer because of your sin.

If you go to same priest regularly, he can perhaps see patterns related to ways you sin and way you do. Priests are trained in such things, and can assist you to over come such in the future.

There is plenty of biblical support for the same as well. If want I can share them. Please write me again, I am at a computer lab and my time is about up for the day.
