Question
Greetings,

I believe that brown friars are Franciscans, white friars Carthusians, but what about black friars, please? Any other colours?

thank you, Simon

Answer
Peace

Dear Simon,
The Franciscan are also called the grey friars, in some English speaking cultures. I never hear of the black friars but I am guessing its the Dominicans. The Jesuits are called the Black Robes, when they were among the early missionaries to Native American Indian cultures, especially in the Northeastern parts of the U.S.A. Even some Franciscans have been called Black Robes, especially the friars of the Conventual Branch of the First Order.

The order of The Merciful Handmaidens of the Immaculate Conception, have a brilliant pink (sometimes called rosa) habit that dates to the middle ages. They are some times the The Rosa Virgins or The Pink Maidens.

Expertise

I am willing to attempt to answer any question. If I don’t know the answer, I will look-up or pass the question on to friends for feed back. Beside Catholicism (especially the social/moral and the Eastern rites), I am well read on Mormonism and so-called Modern Christian Fundamentalism. Also I study Franciscan History as means of growing in my lay Franciscan calling to holiness in Christ.
