Catholics/Garments Worn

Question
I can recall that as a child I would see my grandmother wearing a handkerchief or cloth over her head whenever she was in church or praying.  I'm curious if there is a name for that cloth.  Are those normally purchased as revered items, like a rosary, or are they everyday handkerchiefs?  Also, was there ever a specific purpose behind it?  Thanks,

Answer

dear Bryan--
Women wearing veils in church has always been a tradition
exemplifying their modesty and femininity. The most common type of veil is called a: mantilla. The custom is based on the words of the St. Paul in 1 Cor. 11:10.
