Question
Hello, i have a question regarding salvation.  Is baptism necessary for salvation?  I was discussing this with a protestant friend of mine.  I was arguing yes, and he was saying no.  what can you tell me about this. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Discussion on the basis of the bible alone can sometimes be difficult.
For Catholics, the Council of Trent defined and explained the necessity of Baptism in Sessions 5, 6, and 7.  The council was dealing with the teachings of the Reformers.
The best text for the necessity of Baptism is John 3:3,5 [the latter verse quoted at Trent].  This passage certainly shows the precept of Jesus making baptism a necessity.
I hope these thoughts are of some help.  If you would like more, please feel free to write again.
Best wishes, Chris.
