Catholics/Relic classes

Question
Hi!

I've seen two different ways of classifying relics lately:
A
1=body part (may also include True Cross and other items from life of Jesus)
2=clothing/posession,
3=Something touched to the relic.

B
1=Body part/clothing
2=Something touched to the relic.

My question is:  What is the source for the classification of relics? IE where did that come from? Is it an official part of the Church's liturgical life, or is it a more informal tradition for which we will see many different opinions?

Secondly, to "make" a third-class relic, is it sufficient to touch the item to a reliquary containing a relic, or is direct contact needed?

Thanks!

Michael

  I believe the classifications came about by customs/traditions related to the liturgy to prevent fraud and other graver sins. Then later canonized by law. I am guessing touching to reliquary would suffice in a few cases.
