Question
Hi,
I grew up Catholic but now am Presbyterian, but i love the song "Ave Maria."  I think its a beautiful song and is one of the most beautiful pieces of music out there today but i have no idea what it is saying or what it is about. All i know is that its about the Virgin Mary.  Could you possibly elaborate on the meaning or interpretation of this song and what it is saying?  Why is it used in weddings or at funerals?
Thank-you.

Indeed, its one of the great master pieces of all-time. The music is awesome and the lyrics are simple. They basicly are a prayer of a woman, asking Mary to pray for and with them to Christ, our Lord. In was written By: C. Gounod in the 19th century. If you want me to attempt to show u the biblical foundation for asking the saints in heaven to pray for us, write me a new question.

Below is the most common English translation:

Ave Maria
Maiden mild
Oh, listen to a maiden's prayer
For thou canst hear a maiden mild
'Tis Thou, 'tis thou canst save amid despair
We slumber safely 'till the morrow
Though we by men outcast, reviled
Oh Maiden see a maiden's sorrow
Oh Mother hear a suppliant child
Ave Maria

Ave Maria
Gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Maria, gratia plena
Ave, ave dominus
Dominus tecum

The murky cavern's air so heavy
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled
Oh Maiden hear a maiden pleading
Oh Mother hear a suppliant child
Ave Maria
Ave Maria
