hi i have a scripture passage that i dont get what it means i need to analyze it using the process of exegesis n i have to refer to the language used, historical context, literary form, authors purpose.
two options:
"blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven"

"you are the salt of earth...."(matt5:13)

The expression: "poor in spirit" is figure of speech that means, the humble or lowly". So the complete expression could mean: those who are humble will be the blessed souls to gain heaven by the mercy and grace of God.

I don't have a bible handy, I believe the second expression you asked about Matt 5:13 could mean one of two things. First that one is the means to preserve the good that in the world. Second it could mean one is to be a means to season (bring to "life") one's world. Of course both only can be done through the grace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
