Question
I've been trying to understand the passage that goes (sorry, I don't have the scripture to reference it with):

"for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved".

what does "call upon" mean, and why do they use the phrase "the name of the Lord".

(I've heard "call upon" means to worship/to appeal...is this correct?)

Thank you,

Matt Bachman

Answer
I have searched for the reference but have not been able to find it.  Without the specific reference, it is difficult to examine the saying.
However, to understand scripture, one has to take account of other passages that deal with the same subject.  In that connection, I did find two passages: Mt 7:21 and Lk 6:46.  These verses point to the need of observing the will of God.
So, possibly the interpretation of "call upon" in your quotation implies doing the will of God.
I am sorry that I am not of more help at this time.
If you could find the verse, I would be pleased to comment further.
In the meantime, best wishes, Matt, and thanks for writing.
