Catholics/suicide

Question
Why does Catholicism forbid suicide? Is it in their teaching? Can you give any references? I the Bible referenced? Or only as an additional bibliography point?

Answer
From early times, Christian tradition has condemned suicide as an offense against God, the giver of life.  We are stewards, not owners, of our own lives.  So, we have a duty to conserve our life.
Current Catholic thought on the subject appears in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 2880-83.  You can access the catechism at:  www.nccbuscc.org/catechism/text/index.htm
I am not aware of a Bible passage that speaks directly to suicide.  The Ten Commandments contain: You shall not kill.
See, Exodus 20:12ff, Mark 10:19ff.
If you would like further thoughts, please feel free to write again.
Best wishes, Cowboy.
