Question
QUESTION: I have a 6 month old Persian male who for the last few weeks likes to "meow" alot and come and walk around my legs. He is an indoor cat and the only time he does go out is when the wife puts him in the balcony. My question is....is he trying to tell me something like its time I found him a female friend to mate with?

Thanks

ANSWER: Charlie,

Cats usually reach sexual maturity at around 4-8 months of age depending on the health, breed and status of the individual cat. Breeding cats is a huge responsibility and considering that there is already a very serious overpopulation crisis I think that you should consider whether or not it's fair to breed your kitty. Also, cats that have been sterilized tend to be less likely to develop serious behavioral issues like marking their territory with urine or feces, wandering, fighting and becoming aggressive. If you have your little man neutered he will be far less likely to develop potentially life threatening health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, or infections of the reproductive system. There is also a significantly reduced risk that this kitty will develop serious behavioral issues if he is sterilized. It's also not entirely safe to allow your cat to wander on the balcony at all... Many cats are seriously injured from falling off of a balcony every year, a significant number become so seriously injured that they die or need to be euthanized. If you would like to allow your cat to sit on the balcony and smell the fresh air then I would suggest that you do so in an appropriate enclosure or by having the cat on a harness and lead. Cats that have been neutered have a significantly longer and healthier lifespan, especially when they are provided with adequate medical care and properly cared for.

QUESTION: If I was to get my cat neatured would he still have a sex drive and would he still be able to mate with a female? I know that she wouldn't get pregnet. I would hate to know that he has a penis for nothing. I would like to know that he could still have sex and not be just laying around the house

Thanks again

Answer
Charlie,

Your cat would still be able to mate if he so chose, however it's not likely that he would bother doing so if he was neutered...Given the massive numbers of mixed breed and purebred cats and kittens admitted to shelter systems worldwide I can honestly say that too many cats are finding out about their sexuality. Sadly these cats often end up being euthanized simply so that more animals can be admitted to the shelter...Room and resources are among the most likely reasons aside from health that a cat or kitten is euthanized in a shelter. Your cat would still be able to use his penis to go to the washroom, so it's not like it would become a useless body part if you have him neutered.

Expertise

I am the proud guardian of 5 mixed breed cats ranging from 12 weeks to 13 years old and one purebred ragdoll. I have 20+ years experience working with mixed breed cats from a variety of different situations. I have fostered cats/kittens with special needs/behavioral issues. I have rescued/rehabilitated/re-homed a variety of stray/abused cats. I can offer advice on managing feral cat colonies, rehabilitating strays and finding them forever homes. I can help you to determine whether a cat is stray or feral, there IS a significant difference. Improperly introducing a new cat/kitten can result in aggression between newly introduced cats because cats are territorial by nature and they don't like sudden changes in their environment. To learn more about a peaceful way to introduce a new cat into a home with other cats please check out my previous answers on this subject. Proper nutrition for cats can be confusing, I recommend checking out catinfo.org which was created by a veterinarian (Dr. Lisa Pierson) who takes a common sense approach to explaining feline nutrition. Cat behavior and instincts are different from those of humans, I can help you understand your cat's needs so that you can meet them adequately and have a balanced, psychologically and physically sound kitty. Cats vary in personality, energy level and intelligence, different approaches may be required to achieve results in terms of training and interaction with your feline companion. An intelligent, high energy cat must be kept busy or they will make their own fun. I am NOT a licensed veterinarian and I can't offer medical advice. If your cat is ill/injured my advice is always the same: get prompt medical treatment provided by a veterinarian. If finances are an issue I will try to find resources in your area that can help with medical costs or make other choices to ensure the welfare of your cat.

Experience

I have fostered feral and stray cats, rehabilitated and homed cats that many people recommended euthanasia for. I am willing to make an effort to do the research and ask questions because I care enough to find solutions to behavioral problems rather than giving up. I have an interest in the use of alternative therapies to help provide the best possible care for all cats and I can say in all honesty that I've seen some incredible things happen for some incredible cats and their human caregivers when the right alternative therapeutic modality is used by a qualified veterinarian with expertise and experience in the field.

Education/Credentials
I've earned my diploma as a veterinary assistant with honors.
