Question
Hi there, I am besides myself regarding my 2 cats. We have to emigrate to Australia from South Africa, the quarantine period is 7 months and it is very expensive. My cats are 5 years old and they are both very spoilt, loved and adored, what would be the best course of action to take, to try and rehome them or to euthanasia them. I am nearing a nervous breakdown, because I don't know what to do. I really don't think they will adjust to being re-homed but then again who am I to take their lives then I may as well die with them.......please help!!

Answer
Hi
please please please have them rehomed. there is absolutely no need to put two healthy young cats down.

All the worries you have about them not adjusting are your feelings not there's. its is normal human reaction we think that our pets will not be able to cope with change etc. it doesn't matter how spoilt they are, they are cats and all cats are very versatile, resourceful and retain a lot of their instincts.

yes they will have a period of adjustment but cats are very good at finding their own feet again and I have known cats who have had a terrible start in life who have turned out to be fantastic loving cats in new homes.

Your cats will be fine with new people, you could even keep in contact with them if you wish.

Please do not tear yourself up about this the answer is simple. Find them new homes or let an animal charity find them a home, but please do not consider euthanasia.

best wishes Kate
