Question
okay; so my cat ran away and i've had him for 3 years.
me and my sister were outside smoking today and we saw him.
we got some cat food and tuna and put it by the tree...
and we could tell when he was getting close because he was whining alot and he wouldn't stop.
but uhm.. we still never got him and he's been missing for about a year and we all thought he was dead.
it was about 5:00am when we saw him..
we tried to get him but he kept running away.
please... i want my rascal back!!!!!
:(

Answer
Hi
there are no guarantees that he will want to come back but your only chance is to try and befriend him all over again and build his confidence in you again. This can take some time and should never try and grab him back as the likely hood is that he will just run away again.

Leave food for him, be near him without approaching him so that he losses the fear then eventually get down on the ground with him and try to get him to come to you to take treats etc, but never try and grab or touch him until he is very confident with you and comes to you for attention. this way he may decide to stay in the long run and you are more likely to have a happy relationship with him.

best of luck
