how old do the kittens have to be before you can touch them?

There is no specific age but it recommended that during the first week that they are not handled too much by humans as this is the time where the cat and her kittens will need to bond. You can certainly give them little strokes on their head but picking them up and holding them should be left for a few days after birth.
