Question
Hi my cat gave birth to 4 healthy kittens 4 days ago and has been a very attentive mother sleeping with them, feeding them regularly and giving them a good old clean. But today she isn't paying them even half as much attention. her behavior has basically reverted to what is was before she gave birth. sitting on the window sill for hours, following me and my girl friend around, sleeping pretty much any were but in the box with her kittens. my question is, is this normal? i mean she has still been letting them suckle and stuff but like i said not half as much.

Answer
Hi Charlie,

Is she taking care of the kits? They should be fed about 5-6 times around the clock. Is she cleaning them still? She needs to do this. Her cleaning them gets rid of their waste. Are the kittens in a warm area? Being that young they are susceptible to getting cold and dying. These are all questions you need to ask. If she is lacking on the answers you are going to have to step up and help raise the kits. If this is her first litter sometimes cats don't know what to do or walk away from being a mother. This might be the case with yours. Here is a link that has some great info on what to do.

Good luck.

Hi Charlie,

I saw your follow up. Yes having sore teats will put her off on taking care of the kits. You can try a product called Bag Balm. You can find it  at most drug stores. It is to treat sore teats. I would take her to the vet though just to be on the safe side. You don't want her getting an infection there. And that's not that uncommon. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
