Question I have 2 Burmese cats (one 3 and the other 4 years old). The 3 year old cat got involved in Road Traffic Accident over 7 weeks ago and had a broken leg and nerve damage to another leg. The 3 year old cat has been kept in a cage for the last 7 weeks. Since the accident the other cat (4 year old) has hissed, snarled and been aggressive towards the other cat (despite them previously being friends and sleeping together and goint out together), she has also become aggressive towards me and wont sit on my lap any longer. The 4 year old cat also won't be in the same room as the other cat or me. Is there anything I can do to help both cats and me get on once again?
Answer Justine,
I have thought about this long and hard and, although I am not a vet, I suspect your 3 year old is in constant pain (just like humans who have had similar injuries) and may or may not improve with time. When you pick up a cat and it hurts them, the behavior you describe is what to expect. It is also possible she suffered brain damage during the trauma.
I would give it a couple of months. Ignore her, do not approach her. Let her decide when she wants to approach you or your other cat. If, after a reasonable amount of time, things do not improve, you should consult with your vet and see what options there may be.
Concerned regards... Norm.
