Cats/Cat Peeing On My Son's Stuff

Question
My son's Russian Blue cat, "Woody"  has been peeing on his stuff for the past six months.  The reason I say "stuff" is because it ranges from his bed to his backpack to a pile of dirty clothes on the floor then maybe my son was sleeping in my bed the previous night and the cat will pee all over my bed the next day! My son is 11 years old and Woody is 9 years old and as I write this e-mail It's almost midnight and I'm doing a load of laundry as once again Woody has peed all over my bed.
Another thing is that I am divorced from my husband and I have full custody of Woody and have 50% of my son, so I'm wondering if that might have something to do with that, because I have noticed that when my son does come home he seems to pee on my sons clothes or my bed or his bed.  What is up with Woody?  It is driving me insane!!

Answer
Paula,

I am wondering if your kitty is missing your son. So, the best solution is to keep the cat out of your son's room.  I expect stress can screw up a cat's bathroom habits.  The other thing to check is whether Woody may have a urinary tract infection, so when he gets excited, he just cannot help himself. So a visit to the vet would be a good first step.

Also, I am assuming you are cleaning the areas where Woody pee'ed with an enzyme based cleaner specifically for animal stains and odors (available at most pet supermarkets#.

You can try putting a Feliway diffuser #available at most pet supermarkets) in your son's bedroom to see if this would help curb Woody's marking tendencies.

Anyway, here is a link to a series of excellent articles on feline litterbox issues which may give you more clues as to what you might do.
