hello,my cat recently died as a result of a car accident,and she was maybe a week away from giving birth,my question is how long would the kittens live inside after the mother died?just wondering cause the person who hit her was feelin pretty bad about the whole deal,thanks,Min
Hi Min. So sorry to hear of your loss. I once asked my vet this exact question, and the answer is only 4-5 minutes. Once the mother stops breathing, the kittens' oxygen supply is cut off, and they, in essence, suffocate. Unfortunately, this rarely leaves enough time to save the litter, even if they are full term.

Experience
I have 15 years of extensive experience with cats ranging from breeding to medical care. My daily routine consists of caring for cats with diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney failure, feline leukemia, feline AIDS as well as feral cats. I have experience with liver patients, heart patients, feline infectious peritonitis, cancer, recovery from amputation and trauma, congenital deformities and most every disease in between. I have assisted cats giving birth and hand-nursed kittens who were neglected by their mother from 2 days old through weaning.
