Question
My 15 yr old male cat 2 days ago, started with a problem, occasionally he shakes his head and when he does he looses his balance, until 2 days ago he was fine, he is still eating and walking around and seems ok in himself

Answer
Hi Helen.  A vet will have to say for sure, but it sounds like your kitty might be having some problems with his ears.  Cats who shake their heads often have ear infections, either bacterial or fungal (yeast), ear polyps, or most commonly, ear mites - microscopic 8-legged creatures that feed on ear exudate and skin debris.  These conditions cause extremely itchy and/or painful ears, and cats with them will shake their heads in an effort to gain some relief.  Some cats also have unexplained itchy, waxy ears, common in older cats.  It's thought this may be allergy-related.  A steroidal ear drop can help bring relief.

I'm not sure how violently he's shaking his head or how long it lasts.  It's also possible he might be having neurological problems, like seizures, if the shaking seems less deliberate.  Most cats don't have full body convulsions when they undergo a seizure but will have tremors, walk in circles or paddle strangely with their legs.

In any case, it's definitely time to get your kitty to the vet.  They'll be able to diagnose exactly what's going on with your fellow and prescribe the best treatment.

Best wishes!
