Cats - My cat poops aliitle outside the box immediately after pooping inside the box

Expert: Norman Auspitz - 11/7/2009

Question
15 year old female-diagnosed w IBD 2 months ago. Her poops have returned to a 7 out of 10 but very smelly. She gets Bud 1ml nightly. Appears to be very healthy.
But now she poops 3x daily-and right after she poops in the box (which is always cleaned) she poops a little in the next room, usually in her cat bed. I removed the bed, so she tried to use the floor-I chased her into the bathroom, where she immediately pooped a small amount.
I watched her, and she looked like she just had to do it, going into the poop position right in front of me.
She has always been a perfect "box" cat.
This is driving me nuts bc I have to take several trips.

Answer
Bob,

At age 15 your cat is geriatric and just may be having aging problems.  In additionm, I do not beleive in IBD except as a dignosis when the vet does not know what else it may be.  If her poop is very tar like in consistency and rather foul smelling, she may have tritrichamonas foetus (a rather nasty intestinal parasite). This organism can be tested for, but can be devilish to do so as the poop has got be less than 3 hours old and the organism likes to hide in the edges and corners of the test pouch. If her liver is in good shape, this can be treated.  If you or your vet needs more information, you can check out:

Also, clean any areas where she has pooped inapropriately with an enzyme based cleaner specifically for pet stains and pet odors (available at most pet supermarkets and farm stores).

Best regards... Norm
