Cats/Long haired becoming short haired

Question
I have a long-haired domestic tuxedo cat that recently has started "chewing" at his fur.  Now, it seems his coat is changing from a long, black fur, to very short light grey fur.  He is only just over 2 years old, so it's not old age.  He has never been outside, but is not spayed.

His weight, litter use, etc. are all fine, and there have been no changes in his behavior.  Is this something I should be worried about?

Thanks!

Answer
HI,
It sounds like the grey coat you are seeing is undercoat, with the longer black coat being the outer coat.  It could be possible that this is an alergic reaction of somesort.  I would check with my vet if this behaviour becomes obsessive or if the kitty begins to chew at his skin as well.
I wish I could be of more help.  You might check on this site and see if there is an animal behaviour expert you could contact.
Best of luck,
