Question
Hi Norm,

I spoke to you the other day about my pregnant persian cat who was very overdue, lost her plug but no signs of labor.
I took her to the vets yesterday morning and the vet advised that if nothing had happened by today then i was to take her in for a C section.

My cat went into labor on her own last night at 71 days but i am very upset.

1st kitten born was completely deformed and born dead. It seemed to have no skeleton, except a skull, no hair and a huge hole in its abdomen.

2nd kitten born has a very twisted back leg

3rd kitten born has 2 twisted back legs and a huge red hurnia looking abnormality on its tummy which is the size of the kittens head!

4th kitten born appears to be normal

What should i do??

Answer
Adele,

Remember, I am not a vet!  However, now you know why she did not want to come into labor on time. Clearly, something went wrong while she was pregnant.  She may have ad a subclinical infection during her pregnancy, or who knows what.

Often twisted back legs will straighten up if you exercise them.  In the 3rd kittens case, I would take it into the vet and see what is going on. It is probable that the kitten will need surgery to survive.  Again, the twisted back legs can often straighten out by exercising them.  Your vet should be able to show you how to exercise the back legs. Once the kittens become active, give them some toweling which will help them exercise those back legs when they vie for nipple position.

At least you have a couple of live kittens, which is better than it could have been.

Please come back to me with any follow ups.

Best regards... Norm.
