Cats/Kitten with cold??

Question
Hello Karen, on the 15th of July I got a bengal kitten...I was told he is 9 weeks old. On the 1st night he was already sneezing, noticed he had a red nose....as days passed he seemed to get worse, more sneezing, mucous from nose, phlegm from his mouth and watery eyes. Then I realized he probably had a cold. Now, though his "miaows" are still muffled, and after giving him various doses of vitamin C and L Lysine, he is getting better, eating and drinking little more, more energy..... but still is clogged up and has mucous coming out from his nose, light greenish in color. I am just wondering if what he has is really a cold, did some research and maybe it could be herpes.....can you help???...should I go to the vet???....I was hoping I could cure him at home, also I am not too much into antibiotics. Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Isis,

You can treat herpes at home with the L Lysine. The green discharge it sounds like there is a secondary bacterial infection going on. For that you will need antibiotics. He needs to be seen by a vet for that. If he does have Herpes,(rhinotracheitis virus), you might want to look into a nasal vaccine for this. It seems to help. I use this for my cats. http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_1000...
You can vaccinate him at 12 weeks with this. In the mean time get him to your vet to clear up that infection. Here's a good link that is chock full of info about this. http://www.vetinfo.com/cherpesgroup.html
Good luck.
