Cats/Neutering male cat after breeding?

Question
Hi Jessica,
I have a male cat and I plan on breeding him with my female when they turn a year old. Then I am going to neuter him. Will I still be able to neuter him after I breed him or will it be to late?

Answer
Hi Tahra.  No, it won't be too late.  You can neuter a male at any time.  The sooner the better, though!  The less of a chance that he'll begin spraying.  So I would get him neutered as soon as you have a successful litter.  If he does begin spraying, neutering should take care of it.  You will just have a heck of a time getting the smell out of your carpets, etc.

Good luck!

I have 15 years of extensive experience with cats ranging from breeding to medical care. My daily routine consists of caring for cats with diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney failure, feline leukemia, feline AIDS as well as feral cats. I have experience with liver patients, heart patients, feline infectious peritonitis, cancer, recovery from amputation and trauma, congenital deformities and most every disease in between. I have assisted cats giving birth and hand-nursed kittens who were neglected by their mother from 2 days old through weaning.
