Question
Karen, i read a post on ali's page about this topic but i had another point i wanted to ask.  My g/f and i just moved in together a few months back.  She has two cats 1 male, 1female.  The male cat is very protective of her and is always trying to keep us seperated.  He has been urinating on my clothes and towels.  I spend time with just him and play with the toys as well as give him treats. at times he will come sit in my lap and nap for hours.  He dosnt have any bladder infection. We use the same laundry detergent, softener. What can i do to stop the urinating?

Answer
Hi Joe,

I am assuming you had him checked for the bladder infection by a vet. If you did then this sounds like a bit of a behavioral problem. There are a few things you can do to correct this. He sounds like he is having territorial problems with you and is under a bit of stress.

First off, if he isn't, get him neutered. This will help immensely. Next, where he is urinating, clean the area with a good enzymatic cat urine cleaner. You can get this at Pet Smart or any other good pet store. This will remove any scent from your clothes and the area that might tempt him back to use it.

Also available at Pet Smart. It works pretty good. Place a litter pan of this near the area he urinates at. Ask your vet about putting him on buspirone (Buspar) or fluoxetine (Prozac). Or some other type of anti anxiety drug. This will alleviate the stress he is going through right now. You can try using a product called Feliway. This mimics a cat's happy pheromones.

Using a combo of these suggestions and time will help you with your problem. And the extra time you are spending with him will also help. He will get over this. It will just take a little patience and doing this stuff. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
