Experience I have extensive experience with cats ranging from breeding to at-home medical care to rescuing homeless cats and placing them in homes. I have assisted cats giving birth and hand-nursed kittens who were neglected by their mother from 2 days old through weaning. I have given supportive care to cats suffering from diabetes, terminal cancer, feline leukemia, feline infectious peritonits, and kidney, liver, and heart failure. I have been through chemotherapy with two of my cats who had lymphoma and have also been through many cutting edge surgeries with my special needs cats.
Question I have a ten week old kitten an she still has diarrhea even after a visit to the vet.I have added pumpkin and yogurt to her food (that's the only way she will eat it), and her feces has gotten a little more thicker, but she still has leakage. What can I give her to make her stools a little more firmer?
Answer Hi Ardith. You definitely need to follow up with the vet and let them know that the treatment didn't work. The kitten may need a different antibiotic than what she was given. You also may need to discuss a diet change with the vet, but I would not make any diet changes prior to a consultation with the vet. The general rule is to take one step at a time.
She certainly shouldn't have leakage, and hopefully that will be resolved with the right antibiotic. Besides the pumpkin and yogurt you're giving, there is nothing that's safe to give a kitten to try to firm up her stools unless under the direct supervision of a vet.
