please help me... my mother cat just had her first litter and they are three weeks old. she has been feeding them and all three seemed to be doing well opened there eyes were verbal and even starting to teeth and walk... today one of them died in my hands it seemed to have a hard time breathing and now another is acting the same way and as i write this is dying in my arms please help me the third seems to be ok now but whatever this is that is hitting them is going through quickly as the  kittens were just fine yesterday.... rip peaches and chrome... 3 wks.old

Answer
Casey,

Remember, I am not a vet, but usually this type of thing is either a "hot" virus or mother's milk has turned sour or both.  So, the first thing to do is to get them to a vet immediately!!!!! Then consider switching them off mother's milk to something like Justborn or KMR via a pet nurser.

If there are any survivors, they should be weaned.  If you need advice on feeding times and amounts and weaning instructions, please get back to me.

Please let me know what happens.

Concerned regards... Norm.

I can answer most non-veterinary questions about cats. My particular expertise is pedigree cats, breeding and showing. However, I am versed in feline behavior, cat breeds and their characteristics, general feline husbandry, and the like.

Experience

I judged for the Canadian Cat Association from 1975 until 1982. I am currently an approved allbreed judge for the Cat Fanciers'' Association (the world''s largets cat registry), and have been judging for them since 1991. I have been breeding pedigreed cats since 1971 and have been exhibiting pedigreed cats in shows since 1970. I obtained my first pedigreed cat in 1970 and have never looked back. In 1971, I obtained my first Abyssinian which has become my primary breed. In addition, I have bred Manx and Persians. Currently, besides the Abyssinians, I am also breeding Maine Coons.
