Cats/Older Female Cat

Question
I have an 11 year old female, indoor only cat, who is constantly going into heat. This has become a huge problem as she has started to urinate on the towel I have placed by the door...for my dogs feet.
I understand from my research that female cats do not have menopause unfortunately. I do not want to have her spayed as I once had a male cat neutered who after the operation, was never again able to control his bowels. Is there a pill I can give her to stop her from going into heat?
Thanks,
Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Terry,

I am afraid, the only real way to prevent heats in cats, that I know of, is spaying.  You can discuss hormone therapies with your vet, and at age 11, they may be suitable.

Remember, I am not a vet, but, as far as reaction to anaesthetic is concerned, the major culprit seems to be a drug called ketamine.  Hopefully most vets have gone away from using that drug, but you can inquire. The anaesthetic of choice with cats has been isoflourine <sp?> amongst the vets I know.

BTW, giving cats pills may be a rather daunting task with some cats!!!!!

Please let me know what you find out.

Best regards.... Norm.
