Question
Hi Jessica!  I've had cats before that have delivered kittens but I'm at a bit of a loss with my Cuda.  She went into labor Friday night, had one kitten Saturday morning, (am not sure about the time because she went up into a tree to have this baby...we had to rescue it...yep, a TREE!), then Sunday morning, she delivered another kitten.  Both babies look great and Mama is doing very well, but she's still meowing alot and licking her genitalia.  She also looks like she still may have a kitten in there.  I've felt and I can't really tell.

Is this unusual for a cat to deliver so far apart?

Thanks for any advice.  The vet is next!

Answer
Hi Jeanne.  It is not unheard of for cats to deliver their kittens on separate days, but it is on the unusual side.  Sometimes all the kittens end up being delivered without incident, but in many cases, it is a signal that there is a problem with delivery, and the mom's and kittens' lives are at risk.  And as she is licking her genital area, this is a certain cause for alarm.  I would most definitely get her to the vet.  Depending on what's found on the physical exam, and perhaps an x-ray, the vet may either give her a shot of Pitocin to strengthen contractions, or may do an emergency spay to deliver the remaining kitten(s) by cesarean.  This is important not only to save the babies but also mom's life.

I hope all goes well.  Enjoy your babies!
