Question
My cat Theo has a really squeaky purr he sounds a bit like a bird is he ok?

Answer
Hi Celia,

Cats' purrs come in all different pitches, and some even combine their purrs with chirps of pleasure that do sound a lot like birds.  As long as Theo's purr has sounded like this all along, chances are this is just the way he purrs.  If it's a new development, it could indicate that he may have some laryngitis or an upper respiratory infection starting.  In that case, it would be best to have him checked out by a vet, especially if his meow gets raspy or he starts sneezing, as well.

Best wishes!

I have 15 years of extensive experience with cats ranging from breeding to medical care. My daily routine consists of caring for cats with diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney failure, feline leukemia, feline AIDS as well as feral cats. I have experience with liver patients, heart patients, feline infectious peritonitis, cancer, recovery from amputation and trauma, congenital deformities and most every disease in between. I have assisted cats giving birth and hand-nursed kittens who were neglected by their mother from 2 days old through weaning.
