Cats/Maine coon cat suddenly changed behaviour after moving to a new home

Question
My 9 month female maine coon cat was always eager, full of energy and she never used to let people touch her too much. A few days ago i moved her to my friends house, as my mother got allergic to her hair (which was everywhere) and first the cat was shy, but then she got used to her surroundings. Only now she lost her energy, she became depressed, always chirps (as if she is crying) and sleeps most of the time. However she is quite social and lets all the people touch her (it's as if she doesn't care anymore), she isn't aggresive. She eats well , but im concerned about her chirping queitly alot, as if she is in pain however there is nothing really wrong with her, she still plays abit if people make an attempt, she eats alot, and goes to toilet, no diarrhoea.
What is wrong? why sudden change of behaviour?
thank you

Answer
Hi Rozalita,

Has your cat been spayed?  Cats will become more vocal and more affectionate when they’re in estrus (heat), and your cat is at the age where most enter estrus for the first time.  This typically lasts for around 7 days, and then the cat’s normal behavior will return for a few weeks, after which the cycle will repeat.  Other signs of heat include raising the rear end when petted, rolling around on the ground and sometimes, loss of appetite.

If your cat is spayed already, or her behavior doesn’t exactly match that of a cat in heat, you should have her checked out by a vet.  The stress of a move can lead to illness or depression.  Your veterinarian can help determine which one your kitty is suffering by conducting a physical exam.  If a medication is necessary, one will be prescribed.

If the vet feels she’s just depressed due to recent changes in her life, you can help her through this by having scheduled playtimes, meal times and grooming.  Cats thrive when a structured schedule is in place, so be sure to get a routine down for her, which will involve plenty of one-on-one attention.

Best of luck!
