Answer
Kelly,

What is going on is perfectly normal.  Yes, things will calm down when Lucky is neutered (the sooner, the better).  Is Lucky drawing blood when he bites the kitten?  If not, it is how they play with each other. If no blood is drawn, no one is getting hurt (no matter what it may sound like)!

Cats go through a reasonably complicated "getting to know you" ritual.  Also, cats have very, very tough skin, so that bites that would cause us pain and bleeding usually do not phase the cats or kittens.  So, I would let them play with each other and ignore any noise, hissing, spitting, posturing, yowling, and the like.  They will eventually get along.  If they are playing chase (even if it ends up in a "fight"), this is a good sign.  Once you let them play together, you should not separate them again.

One other thing, if you pay attention to the kitten, make sure you give Lucky extra attention and special treats.  You want Lucky to come to feel that having the kitten around is a good thing.  After all, cats do get jealous!

Given their ages, the whole "getting to know you" thing should take no more than a few weeks at most. There is one caveat: Occasionally, two cats just do not get along, but this seems to be fairly rare.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards... Norm
